Syllabus for MA303 - Section 001,  Spring 2024

Linear Analysis

The course meets in 2229 in SAS Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3:00pm and 4:15pm

1. Instructor:
Dr. Mikhail Gilman
Office Hours: VIRTUALLY via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30pm - 6:00pm by appointment (email me ahead of time whether you plan to attend). Other options may be available.
E-mail address: mgilman@ncsu.edu

2. Textbook (mandatory):

  • N. J. Rose, Introduction to Linear Analysis, Department of Mathematics, NCSU, by Tailored Text, any edition.

  • 3. Content delivery: Lectures will be delivered face to face in 2229 SAS Hall. Everything else will be done online, including office hours and tests/exams. The Zoom connection detail for office hours is provided in Wolfware. Exams will be given in Moodle and homework assignments will also be collected in Moodle. Moodle is accessed via Wolfware.

    4. Grading Policy: Three midterm tests will be administered throughout the semester, they will comprise 60% of your overall grade (20% each test). Homework (all of it - see item 6) will count toward another 10%. The remaining 30% will come from the final exam (cumulative). The final exam for this class has been scheduled for Thursday, April the 25th, between 3:30pm and 6:00pm (check the general examination schedule for Spring 2024). Your overall numerical grade will be converted to a letter grade as follows: 97 and above is A+, starting from 93 and below 97 is A, starting from 90 and below 93 is A-. Similarly for the B, C, and D ranges. Anything below 60 is F.

    5. Tests: All three midterm tests, as well as the final exam, will be administered in multiple choice format. They will include bonus questions, so in principle one can earn more than 100 points on each test. Extra points earned on one test may compensate for points missed on another test (final exam is included both ways), subject to the percentage weights outlined in item 4.

    6. Homework will be assigned weekly throughout the semester and a due date will be specified for each assignment. Each assignment will be collected and graded partially (one or two problems from the set). If you do not submit a given assignment by 11:59pm on the day it is due, there will be an additional period of time during you can still submit it to receive 50% of the credit. If you miss the submission window entirely, or miss the specific problem(s) that are graded, you will not receive any credit for the assignment. There is no partial credit for homework exercises. Any imperfections in your submitted solution(s) that go beyond the minor typos will render the entire solution incorrect.

    7. Submission of your work: Homework assignments will need to be uploaded to Moodle. Computer typeset papers are preferred (PDF or MS Word); handwritten papers scanned to a PDF will be accepted as long as the handwriting is legible. (Note that scanning and photographing are not quite the same, see item 10. It is important that you upload your homework paper as one file. Separate photographs of individual pages will not be accepted.)

The midterm tests will be open on Moodle for the entire day of the test. All multiple choice questions will need to be answered directly on Moodle. Each multiple choice question has only one correct answer.

    8. Topics and estimated days allocated to each topic:

  • Tentative course schedule in PDF

  • 9. Schedule of homework:

  • Homework assignments

  • 10. Technology requirements: You will need to have a personal computer (or tablet, such as an iPad or Android) with Internet access to participate in Zoom office hours and be able to submit your homework and take tests. Mobile phones are not recommended for these purposes. You will also need the capacity to scan documents should you choose to submit homework in handwritten form, see item 7. Many smartphones offer a scanning capability, and you may find the following resources helpful.

  • For iPhone, scan using the Notes app.

  • For Android phones, scan using the Google Drive app.

  • 11. Additional assistance (tutoring, scanning) is available at Math Multimedia Center.

    12. Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities. Please note that concerns/fears about COVID-19 do not constitute a disability. A common example of accommodations for students with verifiable disabilities is extended time on tests. In order to take advantage of the available accommodations, students must be properly registered with the Disability Resource Office. For more information on NC State's policy on working with students with disabilities, please see the Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Regulation (REG02.20.1).

    13. Attendance will NOT be taken, although class participation is strongly recommended.

    14. Please familiarize yourself with the most recent NCSU policies and protocols regarding COVID-19. In particular, face coverings (masks) are not required on campus, but wearing those is encouraged.

When completing all course assignments, students must adhere to NC State academic integrity standards, as per the Code of Student Conduct policy (NCSU POL11.35.1).
Students are responsible for reviewing the Policies, Regulations, and Rules (PRRs) that pertain to their course rights and responsibilities. These include:
Equal Opportunity, Non-Discrimination and Affirmative Action Policy,
    Code of Student Conduct,
and Grades and Grade Point Average.
